The problem:

Scales are a major problem for various equipments, sub assemblies etc. Scales are formed in portions which are in continuous contact with water. They reduce the functioning of the equipments as they are bad conductors. Increases fuel consumption and may also damage the equipment.

At present, these scales are removed manually. This method is uneconomical because it not only involves considerable amount of time and manpower. But also reduce the life of the equipment. Formation of scales results in extra wear and tear of the equipment.

Equipment affected by scale formation:

Compressors, Oil Coolers, Chillers, Blowers, Condensers, Water Tanks, Radiators, Heat Exchangers etc. are some of the main equipments where the scales are formed.

For example to remove the scales from the radiator the same has to be demounted. The inner surface is scrubbed manually to remove the scales. In addition, HCL is added to loosen the grip of the scales which loosens it up to a certain extent only. It not only erodes the metal surface of the radiator but also leaves some portion of the scales unattended which may also reduce the life of the radiator.

Scales are also formed in the water jacket attached to the radiator. Approximately 20% of the scales are in the radiator and 80% are in the water jacket. At present, to clean the water jacket engine has to be demounted so that water jacket can be opened and cleaned manually. However, scales are not removed completely even after the engine is demounted which means:

• Reduction in the life of the equipment.
• Increase in the consumption of fuel.
• Involvement of labour for long hours.
• Accumulation of waste in the working area.
